If you’ve never dug a grave you should try it some time. No cheating with power equipment mind. Pick and shovel or it didn’t happen, no matter how much you cried in the process.
Whether or not you’re a member of that singular group, tonight’s Dark Sentiment will present musical selections from a genre you may not have known existed — songs about filling graves, and the craft of them what digs ’em.
Something strong from the middle shelf tonight — from the Rye, Bourbon, or Irish selections I think.
Let’s begin with this ditty from The Band Perry — Better Dig Two. Ol’ Grave Digger’s but a supporting character here, but he’s got quite an order to fill.
Next up is Willie Nelson with Gravedigger I don’t believe anyone should expend a lot of words introducing anything that comes from the Dread Pirate Willie, at peril of speaking beyond their station.
Yes I know, when Peter Gabriel performs Digging in the Dirt he’s not singing about actual dirt, but the ground breaking (see what I did there?) visuals in this decidedly 80’s music video make it worthy of being here. That and the pronounced appearance of Tiger Swallowtail Butterflies that are, by my experience, among the most suicidal of insects.
Let’s switch gears to Blues Saraceno with Grave Digger. Quelle surprise! Nobody gets away lad, and everybody dies alone.
Lest you soak up too much of a good thing Goode Reader, here’s the inimitable Corb Lund with Dig Gravedigger Dig to sing us out. More encouraging words were never sung. Until tomorrow night.
interesting way to start the day with five of the morbid genre. Had to listen twice to try and get the lyrics but the message is implicit I did however dig a grave for a friend’s father back in 64 when the cemetery workers went on strike. It was freezing and the middle of the night.
