  5. Fay Sullivan says:

There are not words to describe the comfort you offer here. Not just for now, but forever. You are a kind man, and your wife has offered me solace and advice countless times. We know you have a true understanding of how we feel, and you also knew Alf, and you have captured his essence here; and that will warm my heart always.

  6. Leroy Hearn says:

My sincere sympathy. Here’s to Alf : A faithful dog will play with you and laugh with you or cry, And when you’re feeling out of sorts somehow he’ll understand, He’ll watch you with his shining eyes and try to lick your hand; His blind implicit faith in you is matched by his great love, The kind that all of us should have in the master up above, When everything is said and done, I guess this isn’t odd, For when you spell dog backwards, You get the name God. Alf was well deserved of all that you penned. I know this because you and Diana spoke oft of this Alf,a huge noble dog with pride and admiration . My sincerest condolences to those family and friends he had to leave behind. It is heart warming to know that there are true guards of honor for Alf and those of his kind .

The most profound of thanks, from Mrs. LFM and me, to everyone who commented here. Most particularly to Fay – when you and Michael granted permission for me to write a memorial to Alf I considered it a sacred trust on a par with being asked to give the eulogy at the funeral of a lifelong friend. A personage of importance. I may have written it, but that wonderful Wife of mine is the Large Fierce Mammal’s Editor in Chief, and nothing leaves here that doesn’t bear her seal of approval. It comes from both of us, with all our hearts.

  11. […] A couple quotes for you from LFM lore – Any Leader of Dogs worthy of the title understands and accepts the responsibilities that come with fully embracing the beautiful thing that is a relationship with a Dog, and knows going in that the relationship comes with an expiry date – one that, with all likelihood, will lead to their being dragged kicking and screaming into being the one who must decide when to end the life of somebody they only want to love and protect forever. ~ Alf vom Garreler Esch – 19 April 2000 to 17 January 2011 […]
