Dark Sentiments Season 14 — Day 21: And Now a Word From the Lady of the Library
Posted By Randy on October 21, 2023
The lovely and ever so eloquent Cinzia Dubois is a PhD student based in Scotland. On YouTube, her nom de guerre is the Lady of the Library where the bill of fare offers “Dark Pages & Eerie Epistles” of the sort that have been a point of LFM enjoyment for many a day.
Tonight’s Dark Sentiment is an exploration of Ms. Dubois’ recent and ongoing treatment of The History of Hallowe’en as she has thus far seen fit to present it. As a libation I would recommend something smooth and soothing to match the voice you are about to hear.
She begins with Samhain (if you don’t already know how to pronounce it, watching the video will fix that). I find this to be a breath of fresh air at a time in history wherein I can’t seem to swing the dead cat (yes, the same dead cat I always use) without hitting someone proclaiming how the Pagans stole Hallowe’en from the Christians so it’s all about cultural appropriation and such like.
Now here is A History of Souling, Guising and Trick or Treating in which we learn of even more questionable adventures in Victorian childhood fun having that even I have practiced. Ah well, there is still time, and I have three sons to raise!
And now, the Headless Horseman. A character most will immediately remember from Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in at least one of its portrayals various, likely including Disney’s 1958 animated production narrated by Bing Crosby, and/or the more recent movie with Johnny Depp in the role of Ichabod Crane, a sample of which you can view here before moving on to dessert.
For those of you who ceased your studies of the subject matter with these, a sigh of relief is in order for Ms. Dubois, of course, did not. Until next time.
