The Thing About Mirrors
By LFM
A mirror is a tricksy thing,
An otherworldly portal,
And nameless things may gather hence
To spy, and leer, and chortle.
No bargain basement “last look” is
Of what I’m speaking here.
Those mirrors with the mileage are
The ones for steering clear.
Ornately framed or simply
Matters not — the glass is all,
And what’s registered upon it
As it hangs there on its wall.
A deceitful thing’s a mirror
Whatever sort you’ve got.
It will show you what you wish to see
As photographs will not.
As cam’ras that are unsecured
May gather prying eyes,
The mirror hangs in innocence
As such, the best of spies.
It gathers in and concentrates
Whatever casts a gleam
Upon its silvered surface to
Reflect but what they seem.
Hang a mirror at your peril,
If you do, please choose with care,
For everything it’s ever seen
Will still be living there.
An artifact of beauty and
An object to take pride in,
Consider living life before
A thing somebody died in.

“It will show you what you wish to see
As photographs will not.”
Never knew the extent of mirrors’ …..darker sentiments
I have mentioned it in passing before in the lead in to a poem about a “cursed” antique chair, so it may have gone unnoticed, but there is an entire sub-industry devoted to evaluating the cursedness of antiques, and if necessary, ridding them of any unpleasant baggage that may have gotten attached along the way.
Mirrors, I’m told, are a particularly adhesive item.
Devlish things they are. And regardless how exquisite I prefer to be, when looking into my eyes, there is no room for lies.
“To seek the Truth is why you’re here,
“It’s why you’re anywhere.”
