Dark Sentiments Season 10 — Day 12: Predator and Prey

I am the mirror the kitten doesn’t see
As it stalks the other.
Its efforts exhausted in reaction
To only what it, itself, has done.
I am the dream that makes real all that you see in me,
And I remain unseen
As you believe in the lies you tell yourself,
Absent thought.

The allure of the Horror genre in art is undeniable, and impinges upon Human consciousness on primal levels ranging from the existential to the sexual.
Man is the ultimate apex predator by design, and our footprint upon the world bears this out without question. Yet the Human brain, with all of its baggage, regards the world no differently now than it did when riding astride the skull of our cave dwelling, fire building, flint knapping ancestors.
The greatest Hunter never forgets that quarry in the forest today isn’t limited to that which he alone stalks, and so crafts himself to be as formidable a Hunter as Prey. This is the reality.
In dream, the mind reacts to a threat as it would if the threat were real. This is also the reality. Keep this in mind as we settle back tonight to consider why fanning the flames of fear and the darkest depths of desire never fails to please.
Here tonight is Dr. Steven Schlozman on the subject of what horror films teach us about ourselves and being human. A nice Potato Vodka and a Louisville Slugger are on the menu tonight.
