Dark Sentiments Season 10 — Day 20: Waiter! Another Round of End of the World!

Tonight’s Dark Sentiment returns to “the end of the world” theme by way of two specially selected short films that both veer markedly from what commonly comes to mind when those words are spoken.
Enjoy!
First up is the 8 minute animated film Arka (Ark in English), released in 2007. Written and directed by prolific Warsaw native Grzegorz Jonkajtys, a man with an impressive CV to say the least.
The plot:
“An unknown virus has destroyed almost the entire human population. Oblivious to the true nature of the disease, the remaining survivors escape to the sea in great ships. “
For my own part, I found the scenes in the hold of the ship with all the hanging laundry were immediately evocative of the Bella Notte scene in Lady and the Tramp, but that’s probably just me.
Gin and Tonic for this one I think, with extra quinine.
Next up is Next Floor, a 12 minute Canadian short drama directed by Denis Villeneuve that premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival —
The film, largely wordless, depicts a group of 11 people endlessly gorging themselves on food at a banquet. The film was conceived by producer Phoebe Greenberg and directed by Villeneuve during a break from production of his feature film Polytechnique.
Beer in a tankard is recommended, to keep the plaster dust out.
A tale told by idiots has to rank as one of my most favorite lines in the entire world and/or universe of written or spoken words. Viva, Willie Quiverstick.
The Laundry definitely dystopian utopia, but aside form that, we are all in the supposed arm of involuntary euthanasia.
