You’ll Have To Try Harder Than That

I was on a construction site last week. A historic old church in Mahone Bay is undergoing renovations and I was there to inspect the upgrades made to the fire alarm system. One of the structural changes involved the addition of a mezzanine above a portion of the Sunday School hall. Access to the mezzanine is by means of a pull down attic hatch with integral ladder.
The picture shows what I found the first time I climbed that ladder – a stout hand rail of the type you’d see in a public washroom for the physically disabled, perfectly positioned to be grabbed by anyone climbing the ladder to lever themselves the rest of the way onto the mezzanine deck.
The Large Fierce Mammal is nothing if not suspicious at every waking moment, and the instant my eyes focused on that rail my bullshit detector almost deafened me. Reaching out with one finger I hooked the bar, gave it a little tug and watched it fall over because it wasn’t secured to the deck by anything more than gravity.
Better luck next time.

lmao, too funny and regrettably way too common in construction.
as for the venue, i miss Mahone Bay — especially the yacht club!
should I send this to building insection?
If you do Val, I’m sure they’ll enjoy it. Maybe one of them put it there as a test.
