Rudyard Kipling’s If is among my favourite poems, and a distinct lack of familiarity with what it says is an unsurprisingly common thread among those I refer to as the GU (Great Unwashed).
Even as I make no pretense of being equal to Kipling, as tonight’s Dark Sentiment I offer …
Then

If you’ve only ever wanted
But have never really sought,
If you call yourself a winner
But you’ve never really fought.
Live one foot behind the safety line,
A catching net below,
If you’re brimming with opinions,
And you choke on, “I don’t know.”
If another’s brains or beauty
Are a personal affront,
So you blame them for your failings,
Then sir, let me now be blunt.
Get used to disappointment lad,
Cast forth your single eye,
The Kingdom of the Blind is thine!
Go rule it ’til you die.
